Outdoor Buddies

Outdoor Buddies is Blue Sky Meadow's inaugural program for disabled children and their teen companions, with Starbucks as its initial sponsor. The program pairs children who have mobility and other impairments with youth from alternative education programs. Together, they will learn about ecosystems, ecology, energy, weather, and astronomy in an adapted version of the exemplary Outdoor Science School curriculum. As the disabled children experience the natural world in new ways, their teen companions will learn the social and relational skills necessary to nurture and help those who face the daily challenge of navigating the world.

Outdoor Buddies begins with opportunities for participants to get to know each other prior to going to Blue Sky Meadow. The program culminates in a five-day, four-night program at the site conducted by Blue Sky Meadow's trained naturalists. The first day and night involves acclimation and skill-building for the teens alone. In fun and creative ways, they will learn how to be companions and learning partners. Based on our experience, most of these youth will experience camp for the first time. The children with disabilities will join them for days two through five. They will explore a variety of natural geologic features around the site, observe life in a natural, high-altitude pond, study plants and animals first-hand, and observe planets and constellations.

Because the Blue Sky Meadow experience is also about building social skills, Outdoor Buddies will share living quarters, set tables for meals, and participate in other daily activities that teach personal responsibility and respect and consideration for others. There will be singing, skits, games, and many other opportunities to have fun and make connections.
